The Gilmer FFA Poultry Team participated at the Texas A&M State Poultry Career Development Event and placed 1st and was crowned State Champions of Texas. Team member Haygan Thomas placed 1st High Individual, while the rest of the team included Garrett Parish, Ashlynn Hill, Jake Traylor, Sean Ray and Clarissa Lopez.

Gilmer will now proceed to compete in the National Poultry Career Development Event held in Louisville, Kentucky during the National FFA Convention. The State FFA Poultry CDE there are over 50 top teams from throughout the state.

During the event the team has to take a written test over the poultry industry, anatomy, diseases and more. Other parts of the contest include grading interior and exterior eggs, grading Ready to Cook poultry, placing laying hens and broilers, grading bone in and boneless poultry products. Gilmer has been a top contender in the state of Texas in the this event over the past several years. Which is substantial because Texas is one of the most competitive states in the Nation in the FFA poultry career development event.
