ETMC Gilmer ranks third in the nation for ‘best physician communication’

Gilmer, Texas - ETMC Gilmer ranked third on a list of hospitals from across the nation with the "best physician communication" published by Becker's Hospital Review.

According to Becker's, "The list is based on HCAHPS survey results reported in CMS' Hospital Compare database and covers the period July 2011 through June 2012."

The HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) survey is a public reporting initiative sponsored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The survey asks a random sample of recently discharged patients about important aspects of their hospital experience, including questions about how well physicians communicated with them during their hospital stay.

Ninety-seven percent of ETMC Gilmer patients surveyed responded that their physician "always" communicated well with them.

"At ETMC Gilmer we strive at all times to provide the best experience for our patients and visitors on every level," said Jorge Leal, the hospital's administrator. "Our high ranking in the area of physician communication is due in large part to our hospitalists, Dr. Ilanko Upendran and Dr. Mark Malone. Dr. Upendran and Dr. Malone are genuinely concerned and compassionate physicians and their actions and words communicate that to our patients."
