ETBU Debate Takes Second Place at Tournament; Wins Professional Division Championship


MARSHALL, Texas (9/17/13)- The East Texas Baptist University Debate Team competed at the Lee College Kickoff Classic Debate Tournament September 14-15 in Baytown, Texas and returned with a second place sweepstakes finish. The squad finished the two-day competition just behind LSU at Shreveport and ahead of much larger universities including Stephen F. Austin, the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and Texas A&M International.

Dr. Cole Franklin, coach of the ETBU team also won the professional division championship and was ranked as the fifth place speaker in the professional division. He posted a 5-2 record in the seven preliminary rounds and defeated competitors from LSU at Shreveport in the semifinal and final rounds to take the title.

Sophomore Dakota Hiltzman of Gladewater finished with a 5-2 preliminary record and lost his first elimination round. He ended the competition as a quarterfinalist in the varsity division and was the second place speaker in the varsity field.

Junior Kenny Adcock of Joshua and freshman Charles Quigley of Houston both competed in the novice division and each posted 5-2 preliminary records. They also advanced to the quarterfinal round before facing elimination.

Other ETBU debaters competing at the event, but not advancing to elimination rounds were junior Payton Beggs of Wichita Falls and senior Ryan Stokes of Nacogdoches in the varsity division and freshman Katelynn "Ro" Burns of Pittsburg,  sophomore Amanda Gill of Austin, sophomore Madysen Neathery of Wake Village, and junior Amanda Oswalt of Grand Prairie in the novice division.

This was the first tournament of the year for the ETBU Debate Team. they will next compete at the University of Arkansas at Monticello Weevil Wars debate  tournament Oct. 4-6.
