Drug war takes prisoners

The 115th District Court in Gilmer, with Judge Lauren Parish presiding, continues to be hard on drug offenders. Drug offenses accounted for most of the 12 guilty pleas and two motions to revoke probation heard in the court Nov. 2 to 9.

Guilty pleas included:

• Kaitlin Godfrey, 23, Gilmer, delivery of a controlled substance-cocaine, a second-degree felony. He received a 12-year sentence, to run concurrently with another delivery of cocaine charge, also a second-degree felony, and a motion to revoke probation for burglary of a building, a state jail felony.

The cases were prosecuted by Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd, while John Moore was defense attorney.

• Renardo Webb, 36, Gilmer, delivery of a controlled substance-cocaine, a state jail felony. He got 18 months in a state jail. Byrd prosecuted him, while Matthew Patton was defense attorney.

• Jason Ray Geers, 35, Gilmer, possession of chemicals with intent to manufacture a controlled substance, a second-degree felony. He received a 10-year prison sentence.

Byrd was prosecutor, and Dwight Brannon was defense attorney.

• Keir Harris, 41, Gilmer, debit card abuse, a state jail felony. He received 20 months in a state jail. Byrd was prosecutor, and Brannon was defense attorney.

• Mark Stevens Brimhall, 19, Jefferson, evading arrest detention with vehicle, a state jail felony. He received five years deferred adjudication probation. He was also fined $500 and ordered to perform 400 hours of community service, in addition to getting a GED or high school diploma.

Upshur County Assistant District Attorney Edward Choy was prosecutor, and John Moore was defense attorney.

• Adam Alexander Beckworth, 27, Big Sandy, forgery, a state jail felony. He received two years in a state jail, probated for four years. He also was fined $500 and ordere to pay $469 in restitution to his victim. Choy prosecuted the case, and Tim Cone was defense attorney.

• Jimmy LaVoice Duffey, 31, Gilmer, delivery of a controlled substance-cocaine, a second-degree felony. He received seven years in prison. Choy was prosecutor, and Charles Van Cleef was defense attorney.

• Richard David Peek, 41, Gladewater, possession of chemicals with intent to manufacture a controlled substance, a second-degree felony. He got 15 years in prison, with the sentence to run concurrently with a first-degree felony charge of possession of methamphetamine.

Upshur County Assistant District Attorney Stacey Brownlee was prosecutor, and Van Cleef was defense attorney.

• Richard Eugene Hampton, 39, Gilmer, possession of a controlled substance-methamphetamine, a first-degree felony. He got eight years in prison. Choy was prosecutor, and Scott Novy was defense attorney.

• Justin Scott Tanner, 25, Hawkins, assault on a public servant, a third-degree felony. He got five years in prison. Byrd was prosecutor, and Clifton Holmes was defense attorney.

The other motion to revoke probation was against Rebecca Lucille Caldwell, 32, Gilmer, assault against a public servant, a third-degree felony. She received five years in prison. Byrd prosecuted her, and Van Cleef was defense attorney.
