Constructing Your Own Platform

Pastor Steve Ellison

As Paul comes to the close of his letter to Titus, he turns his attention to an overarching principle that if heeded will serve Titus and you and me well. Paul points out the need to be excellent in all that we do. Titus 3:12-14 states, “When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, make every effort to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. 13 Diligently help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way so that nothing is lacking for them. 14 Our people must also learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful.” NASU  Paul’s instructions indicate the necessity of being committed to the ideal of excellence and to the pursuit of excellence. He instructed Titus to “make every effort”, to “diligently help”, and to “see that nothing is lacking”.  Clearly, by His use of superlatives, God is calling Titus and every believer to a lifestyle of excellence.

The Bible gives us much motivation for living a lifestyle of excellence. Colossians 3:17 tells us that anything and everything we do should be done in the name of Jesus.  Colossians 3:23-24 lets us know that we work not for ourselves or any other earthly person, but rather we work for Christ. First Corinthians 10:31-33 gives us two incredible truths: everything we do should be done for the glory of God and we should do those things well so that the unbeliever might come to Christ.  Ephesians 6:5-8 tells us that if we do our work with good will, realizing that it is God whom we serve, then God will reward us.

Society is quickly deteriorating.  Christ is the solution. He stands ready to change individual lives.  Titus 3:14 quoted above tells us that as believers we must learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs so that we will not be unfruitful. If we live excellent lives according to the standards Christ has laid down for us, engaging in good deeds, then those who observe us will be ready to agree with Christ that they need to be changed from the inside out.  The lost and dying world is watching believers to see if we have what they need. How we handle life is important. Are you self-controlled and above reproach? Do you take other believers to court?  Do you care for your aging parents? Are you living a sexually immoral lifestyle, heterosexual or homosexual? Are your business dealings done with integrity?  Do you handle bankruptcy issues the same way an unbeliever does? Do you stir up trouble?  What do you do when you are unjustly fired?  How do you respond when the doctor says its cancer? Do you walk away from your spouse when things don’t go well? Is your tongue under control?   Your answers are of the utmost importance.

God’s method for transforming societies is to place clean men and clean women into corrupt societies so that He can display His mercy, grace, and power.  Maybe you think that it would be great to have the platform for testifying about God that famous Christian athletes and entertainers have.  Maybe you are even a little envious of them. Men and women who work honestly in the marketplace, living quiet lives of excellence, realizing that everything they do is a service to the Lord and for His glory create their own platform.  This platform earns us influence with those who matter most: our families, friends, and neighbors. We can influence those who know us, if we have earned that privilege. …..…
