Harris is a self-taught Louisiana folk artist. Her art is characterized by a directness and vigor that is a result of her past. Harris has overcome both domestic violence and poverty. She paints on canvas, wood, cardboard, and fabric using acrylic paints and house paint. Harris has also penned an autobiography entitled: “The Courage to Rise Again.” The G. Scott Griffin Award is given annually by The Community Foundation to a local artist, in any media, who has overcome adversity to make a contribution to the community in the execution of his or her art. Harris will also receive a $1,000 cash prize as part of the award.
Joshua Chambers piece “I can’t be what I once was” was selected as Best of Show by Lauren Buscemi, San Diego-based Art Critic, at the “Critical Mass” exhibition last spring. As the Best of Show Artist, Chambers solo exhibition will be featured at artspace until August 24, 2013.
