Clothes Closet donations amount to $53,025

THE CLOTHES CLOSET of Gilmer’s First United Methodist Church continued its local charitable work this week, when it donated $10,000 to the Upshur County Child Protection Board. The Clothes Closet, open 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays and Saturdays (except for holidays), sells most idonated clothing at 25 cents an item to raise funds. It is located next to the First United Methodist Church at the intersection of Montgomery and Buffalo Sts.

During its last accounting year, Septemberm 2011 to September 2012, this good-works ministry of the church was able to donate $53,025 to various charities and local organizations which benefit others.

Recipients included Gilme Fire Department, Scout Hut renovation, Methodist Men, FUMC’s Thankgiving program and the Upshur County Shares Food Pantry.

Also, the Upshur County Child Welfare Board, First United Methodist Church youth group, the FUMC team for the Rotary Club’s Bee for Literacy Spelling Bee and the Relay for Life endeavor to raise funds for cancer research.

Also, Upshur County Friends of the Library, Upshur County Arts Council, and the Gilmer Schools’ food backpack program.

(Specific amounts to each group were not available at press time.)

The Clothes Closet is open 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays and Fridays (except for holidays and the Yamboree). Any clothing item is 25 cents. Books and related items are 10 cents.

From time to time, there are other items, such as housewares and small items of furniture, which are priced fairly.

It is located across from the First United Methodist Church, at the intersection of N. Montgomery and Buffalo Sts. in Gilmer.
