This Friday night’s Homecoming game against the Jacksonville Indians is the first of four scheduled for Buckeye Stadium in 2012, the others being District 16-3A games against Chapel Hill on Oct. 5, Spring Hill on Oct. 26 and Kilgore on Nov. 9.
Head Coach Jeff Traylor did not want to dwell on the Buckeyes’ 42-12 road loss to Plano Prestonwood Christian Academy last Friday night, but commented that he and his offensive coaches had a “terrible plan” and “did not put our kids in a position where they could have success.”
On the other hand, “Defensively, we played good enough to win the ball game. But we had a terrible plan offensively and didn’t execute very well on top of that.
“So if you have a bad plan and your kids don’t execute very well, it leads to disaster.
“If we could have given our defense any help at all, they would have kept it up. We just couldn’t give them any help.”
Coach Traylor also pointed out the blocked punt which led to a PCA touchdown, numerous penalties and a failure to execute a 2-point conversion off a fake kick as lapses that hurt the Buckeyes.
“They were really good,” he said of the Lions, “and we made them look a lot better.”
“We just aren’t ready for that caliber of a team yet,” he added. “We’re gonna be. We’re just not yet.”
He said his team had been “fantastic” so far in terms of their attitude since the loss, maintaining their routine and discipline of watching video Saturday and lifting weights Monday morning.
Then came one of Coach Traylor’s gems of wisdom, “Adversity is what makes real relationships. You don’t have a real relationship until you’ve had something bad happen, with a friend or whatever it might be.”
He then went over some of the Black Flag Defenders who performed well for Gilmer.
“Charles Williams had a good game with three tackles, five assists and a sack. Ardarius Johnson played well, three tackles. Justus Cheatham had six tackles and made an interception. CJ Williams had five tackles, two assists. John McPherson, eight tackles, two assists. Brandon Barnes, six tackles, four assists.”
Like Gilmer, Jacksonville is 1-1. The Tribe won its opening game, a 34-30 upset of Carthage in Carthage, before falling 37-20 to Palestine last Friday night in Jacksonville.
“Palestine’s pretty talented, a really good football team,” said Traylor, noting that the Wildcats took Waco La Vega, one of the top teams in the state, to overtime before falling 24-23 in their season opener.
Jacksonville, a member of District 16-4A, is a “heavy senior team” and thus has an identity, he said. A lot of teams this early in the season are still growing up and trying to find out who they are.
However, the Tribe was starting sophomore Carter McCown at quarterback (a cousin of the three McCown brothers Jeff Traylor coached when he was at Jacksonville, two of whom are still NFL quarterbacks) until he sustained an injury which caused him to miss the Palestine game.
Trevor Ewalt, a senior, replaced McCown against Palestine.
Phil Kuchinsky reported on KETK’s “Friday Night Fever” segment with Danny Elzner that his sources at the game in Jacksonville told him that McCown has “a hairline fracture up around his collarbone” and will be out three to four weeks. Senior Bryson Haywood, last year’s leading tackler, is a force on defense for the Indians. He also may be a bit banged up.
“He’s probably the best linebacker in that district,” said Traylor.
Sha'kil Mosley is another good senior linebacker. Senior Londedrick Taylor is a good cornerback.
The Buckeyes are very familiar with senior wide receiver Darrell Minifee of the Indians. He has caught 10 passes for 163 yards, two touchdowns and a 2-point conversion in two previous games against Gilmer. Senior Dadrian Franklin is another skill player to watch out for. It is even possible he could play quarterback.
UPDATE: The dual threat Franklin almost CERTAINLY will play quarterback Friday night and probably will be the starter after his performance off the bench in the fourth quarter against Palestine, throwing two touchdown passes and also exhibiting elusiveness as a runner.
Senior Ladarius Session has had some success in previous games against Gilmer.
“They’ve got some good ball players,” concluded the Gilmer mentor. “They’ll give us trouble Friday night.”
Gilmer and Jacksonville began playing each other in 2010 for the first time since 1957. The Tribe won 43-36 two years ago in Gilmer, but lost at home 44-22 last year.
Coach Chris Taber is in his first year as chief, but is no stranger to the Tribe. He began his coaching career in Jacksonville in 2001, a year after Coach Jeff Traylor left for Gilmer. However, Coach Matt Turner, longtime Gilmer offensive coordinator, remained on the Jacksonville staff for a few years after that.
Coach Taber cited Coach Turner as a major influence in an interview last month with Clint Buckley of ETSN.fm.
“You try to build your career around people that you’ve learned from, and the guys I worked under were phenomenal,” Taber said.
One coach in particular Taber found an immediate connection with was Turner.
“I’d come up here in the mornings with him, watch film and work his quarterbacks during the (athletic period),” Taber said. “Just listening to him coach and the passion he had for it really had a stamp on who I was and who I was going to become.”
Taber left Jacksonville and went to New Braunfels with fellow assistant Thomas Sitton (who had been hired by then-head coach Danny Long to replace Jeff Traylor on the Tribe’s staff) and then returned to East Texas when Sitton took the Chapel Hill head coaching job in 2009.
For the last three seasons, he has been CH’s offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. The Bulldogs went to the state title game in Class 3A Division I twice in those three years, winning state in 2011.

Braylon Webb is starting at safety for the Missouri Tigers. He was a senior on the 2009 Buckeyes who won state and is now a sophomore at Mizzou. He redshirted in 2010 and was team freshman of the year last season, also making the Big 12 honorable mention team in the Tigers’ final year in that conference.
Michael Boddie, former Buckeye who is a year younger than Braylon, is an offensive lineman for Missouri. He redshirted in 2011 so he is now a freshman in eligibility.
Gus Johnson, in Boddie’s class at GHS, is the starting tailback for the SFA Lumberjacks in Nacogoches, where he is a sophomore.
