The Gilmer Buckeyes got one last 7on7 tune up in Monday evening at Pine Tree Pirate Stadium in Longview before heading to College Station Wednesday for the Division II 7on7 State Tournament on Thursday and Friday, as they played two games against the host Pirates.

The Buckeyes had little trouble in either contest. In the first game they jumped out to a 22-0 halftime lead before cruising to a 42-6 victory. They bent a little defensively at times during the game, but never broke. They did struggle a bit with extra points in the second half of the game, but were so much more talented that their opponent that it was never an issue.

In the second game, the Bucks continued to struggle with extra points, missing all three of their attempts, but they still had a commanding 18-0 lead at the half. The improved in that area in the second half and made one 2-point conversion and a 1-point conversion, and rolled to a 39-6 win.

Gilmer is in a tough pool at the State Tournament, as they will face Cuero, Boerne and Sweetwater in Pool L play on Thursday games at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. All 64 teams participating will advance to the playoffs beginning at either 8 or 9 a.m. Friday morning. The top two teams in each pool will go into the Championship Bracket and the bottom two teams will drop to the Consolation Bracket.

In order to win State on Friday, the Bucks would have to play and win five games. Friday’s games are single elimination, and when you lose, you’re done. Gilmer has lost only one game during the 7on7 season. That loss was to Waskom at the first tournament held at Buckeye Stadium back in late May. The Bucks have a very legitimate chance to win the Title this week.

The Mirror will have complete coverage both online and in the printed paper. Good luck, Buckeyes. We’re cheering for you to win the first of two State Championships in football this year!
