Students in Gilmer High School’s Medical Terminology course received training in CPR and the use of Automated External Defibrillators in the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course. The course was taught by Hillary Harris, RN, BSN, the school nurse at the high school, and class teacher. The course was designed to teach students how to identify victims of cardiac arrest and to provide high quality CPR and use of an AED. The new program, named Beats for Buckeyes is aimed toward preparing students at Gilmer High School to respond to cardiac arrest at home and in the community. These students will be certified at the level required for working in a hospital or doctor’s office, which helps them in securing employment in the future. If anyone would like to make a donation to the program to help fund the certification of more students at Gilmer High School, you can contact Hillary Harris at 903-841-7505 or harrish@gilmerisd.org. This is just another example of how Gilmer ISD is preparing our students for the college and career experience, and to be assets to the community as a whole.
Gilmer High School is currently in the process of becoming the first certified Heart Safe School in the East Texas area.
