Barry Smitherman, one of three candidates for Texas Attorney General in the March 4 Republican primary, will speak at the Gilmer Country Club Thursday night.

The general public is invited to his 7 p.m. appearance, sponsored by the Upshur County Conservative Coalition. Those attending are encouraged to dine at their own expense, said coalition member Cynthia Ridgeway.

Smitherman is chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission, an elected body which now regulates the oil and gas industry rather than railroads.

His opponents in the GOP primary for Attorney General are Ken Paxton, who had a telephone interview with The Mirror while passing through Upshur County last year on a campaign swing, and Dan Branch.

Upshur County Pct. 2 Comm. Cole Hefner has endorsed Paxton and accompanied him on his East Texas campaign tour.

Sam Houston is unopposed for the Democratic Party nomination for Attorney General in that party’s Nov. 4 primary. Three candidates are vying for the Libertarian Party nomination for the post, which will be decided at a convention: Jon Roland, Tom Glass and Jamie Belagia.

Winner of the GOP primary will oppose Houston and the Libertarian nominee in the November general election.
