Deep South Brahman Association Program Recap

Hattiesburg, Mississippi- ABBA held a Producer Education Program on Friday, April 5 at the Southeast Livestock Association Auction in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. This event was held in conjunction with the Deep South Brahman Sale.

A amiable crowd was in attendance to hear presentations from representatives of different sectors of the beef industry on their utilization of Brahman and F-1 genetics.  The program was moderated by ABBA Vice President J.D. "Bubba" Sartwelle, Jr.

Sartwelle laid the basis of the day's program and gave an overview of the role of the Brahman breed in the commercial cattle world.

ABBA Executive Vice President Chris Shivers discussed the ABBA F-1 & F-1 Plus Certification Programs. Shivers reviewed the simple mechanics of the program, the benefit of the program, and economic value to both the producer and purchaser of the females.

Stacey Broadhead of Mendenhall, Mississippi then told his story of success using the F-1 cow in his commercial operation. Not only did Broadhead give a glowing report of the performance of the cattle in the pasture but also their progeny's performance in the feedyard.

Robert Bergner from Hitch Feeders in Hooker, Oklahoma was present to discuss the profitability of feeding F-1 and  ¼ Brahman steers in the feedyard.  He told of the efficiencies and overall profitability that he had seen in feeding the cattle in his Oklahoma feedyard.

Stanley Knight of Mt. Olive, Mississippi followed up with an overview of his operation and the type of genetics he uses to produce F-1's.  Knight's practical presentation also included discussion of marketing both heifers and steer calves while receiving top dollar for both.

The last speaker of the day was Joe Johnson, Manager of Southeast Mississippi Livestock Association Auction.  He discussed marketing opportunities available to local producers.  Johnson also spoke of the top prices that could be earned for both Brahman influenced steers and heifers.

Sartwelle concluded the program and opened the floor for questions.

Following the seminar, attendees had an opportunity to visit and view the offering of the Deep South Sale before enjoying a hamburger supper sponsored by ABBA.

BIF Early Registration Deadline Nearing

June 12-15, 2013

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Oklahoma State University, in collaboration with the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF), will be hosting the 45th Annual Beef Improvement Federation Research Symposium and Meeting.  BIF is an organization dedicated to coordinating all segments of the beef industry, from researchers and producers to retailers, in an effort to improve efficiency, profitability, and sustainability of beef production.

BIF was initiated almost 70 years ago to encourage the use of objective measurements to evaluate beef cattle.  Continuing the tradition, BIF is now the clearing house for developing standardized programs and methodology for recording of performance data for all traits from birth weights to carcass traits.  Their three leaf clover logo symbolizes the link between industry, extension and research.

The 2013 BIF convention will be held in Oklahoma City from June 12-15, 2013, at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center.   It will be a forum bringing together industry professionals, producers, and researchers to discuss current issues facing the beef industry.  The schedule boasts an interesting array of speakers, socials, and tours that promise to be exciting and informative.   Special features include a night out at the National Western Heritage Museum and Cowboy Hall of Fame featuring live music and museum tours.  We are anticipating a large turnout and hope that all of you will be there to promote the rich history and spirit of Oklahoma beef production.

You can see the schedule and register for the convention by visiting the Oklahoma State extension website.

Or visit beefimprovement.org for more information.

Early registration is $250 and ends April 15, after which time registrations will still be accepted at a higher price.

Hotel rooms at the headquarters can be reserved in the BIF block at a reduced rate by contacting the hotel directly at (405)228-8000.  Additional rooms at the same rate are available at the Courtyard Marriott by calling (405)232-2290. We hope to see you there!
