ETMC Gilmer earns designation as Level III stroke support center

The Texas Department of State Health Services has designated ETMC Gilmer a Level III stroke support center.

"Your hospital is to be commended for its ongoing commitment to ensure quality care is available for stroke patients in its area," said TDSHS Commissioner David Lakey, MD, in his notification letter.

There are 101 designated stroke facilities in Texas. The Methodist Hospital in Houston is the state's only Level I stroke facility. There are 96 Level II stroke facilities, including ETMC Tyler. ETMC Gilmer is one of only four Level III facilities and the first ETMC affiliate hospital to earn designation as a stroke center.

To earn the two-year designation, ETMC Gilmer had to pass an extensive on-site survey during which all its stroke protocols were evaluated. Also, the state reviewed data compiled over a six-month period by the hospital to ensure current clinical guidelines relating to stroke care were followed.

In addition, ETMC Gilmer and other Level III centers must have the equipment, protocols and specially trained personnel needed to resuscitate, stabilize and assess stroke victims and provide treatment or immediate transfer to a higher level stroke center. They also must provide ongoing educational opportunities for healthcare professionals and the public relating to stroke and implement stroke prevention programs.

"We are proud of the team members at ETMC Gilmer who have worked so hard to attain this designation," said Jorge Leal, the hospital's administrator. "Such an achievement is rare for a hospital our size, but it is a reflection of the commitment these men and women have to providing the highest level of care to the patients we serve."
