LONGVIEW — Buckner International and 89.5 KVNE and 91.3 KGLY invite the East Texas community to collect new shoes with Shoes for Orphan Souls® during the months of July and August to benefit local low income children as they prepare to go back to school. The shoes collected during this drive will be distributed to children at the annual School Supply Train hosted by Buckner and the Junior League of Longview.

“89.5 KVNE and 91.3 KGLY are so excited to be partnering with Buckner this year,” said Jill Smith, director of community relations for 89.5 KVNE and 91.3 KGLY. “It has been amazing to already see how this community rallies around our children.  Business, organizations and churches are coming together for one cause - providing shoes for East Texas kids in need.  Our goal is 4,000 shoes which is huge, but we know that individuals and families will step out and make this happen.”

Individuals can drop off new shoes at select local businesses throughout East Texas. Longview Mall located at 3500 McCann Rd. and Broadway Square Mall located at 4601 South Broadway Ave. in Tyler, Texas will also be accepting shoes on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. For a complete list of drop-off locations or to register your shoe drive, please visit www.buckner.org/shoes.

Due to the age of the children going into school, the greatest need is for new athletic shoes sizes Youth 4 – Adult 9.

“Last year the School Supply Train assisted 3,200 children and this year the need is even greater as we hope to help 4,000 children get ready for the new school year,” said Jane Ann Crowson, director of the community transformation center for Buckner East Texas. “In the past the School Supply Train has provided backpacks, school supplies, haircuts, uniforms and immunizations - the only element missing was a new pair of shoes. Thank you to everyone who is planning to play a part in helping us outfit these children with brand new shoes so that they can start this school year with pride.”
