Mockingbirds grow up fast

Mirror Photo
THIS FLEDGLING MOCKINGBIRD looks to be about ready to leave the nest Monday evening (April 28). There is a sibling, the markings of which you can see below this one’s beak, who is apparently still reluctant to face the world. There are always mockingbirds hanging out in the pecan trees and bluebonnets behind The Mirror, giving us a trifecta of Texas’ state bird, tree and flower on the same lot.

THE NEXT DAY, the young bird did venture out onto the foliage of the shrubbery which concealed his nest. By Wednesday (April 30), he had managed somehow to get to the other side of The Mirror's advertising building where he spent all day in a redbud tree. Up in a nearby pecan tree, an adult mockingbird (probably the father) glares at the photographer who has horned in on his family's territory at this critical time. By the way, the other fledgling also had left the nest at some point, leaving it empty.
