Gilmer Mirror 1/19/11 letter to the editor

Dear Editor:

Watching the news about the mess in Tucson, Ariz. I just wonder how long it will be until something like this happens in Gilmer. The three ring circus, aka, the Upshur County Commissioners Court and the Upshur County District Attorney is leading us in that direction, full steam ahead. Folks, let me tell you something, things are at a fever pitch here in Upshur County. We have gone from a gentleman wanting to get his road fixed, to three county officials brought up on criminal charges. I have seen folks so mad they might pinch your head off, I've seen them shed tears and some even find the whole thing as humorous. Well it ain't funny. I am not going to pretend to know all the things that got us where we are today. However, I have read in the paper that the judge asked the sheriff to remove a disruptive person from the meeting. He did so and was then charged with a criminal offense. I just hope when I find myself with a potentially threatening situation that law enforcement doesn't spend to much time trying to evaluate what the consequences might be before helping me. It looks to me, as though, we are placing our peace officers in a precarious situation. This seems really dangerous to me. I'm not trying to be a comedian but due to the gag order I had to go out of town to get some legal advice. I was able to set up a conference call with Judge Judy and Judge Joe. I explained everything I have learned about the cases to them and asked where are we headed now? Well, they pointed out, looks like ya'll are in for five jury trials, boy they said, that's going to be very expensive. Judge Joe said, you will have to have a visiting judge to hear these cases, man he said, that cost a whole lot. I just knew Judy would bring up the old change of venue deal, Joe chimed in maybe ya'll can use some of that grant money to pay for that, cause that cost as much as going to Disney World. They did agree there would be savings as the jury probably won't need to be sequestered, as this is just a misdemeanor. I knew you would say,“you can't put a price on justice.” Yeah, I know,so I asked Judge Judy,“what are we to expect for our bucks?” Well, let's see, we have a class A misdemeanor, might go to trial as a class B. I'd say anyone found guilty will probably get a really really ugly letter placed in their file and I'm sure they will have to promise not to ever do this again. Boy, I tell you, we’re just not getting our money's worth. Judge Joe, sensing my concern, said he had sources that say there's more to this than we know. He predicted that when this comes out, there might even be some community service thrown in for good measure. Well, I guess it really doesn't matter how many hundreds of thousands of dollars this will cost as long as somebody gets a little political advantage out of it. What the heck! This sounds ridiculous doesn't it? I think so, too. While there are only a few bloody noses, why don't we find someway to put an end to this, before the real blood starts to flow? On the news they were just talking about congressman wanting to start carrying guns. Is that where we are headed? Please everyone, let’s remove our egos, and do what is best for this county. Let's stop this show if any way possible. I want to end with a word of prayer. Heavenly Father, may we all be your humble servants. Father give us wisdom to do your will here on earth. Father God we pray for your guidance as we do the work of this county and may we always seek your leadership. Father forgive us our sins and as you have forgiven us may we forgive those with whom we have conflict. Dear God always help us to do unto others as we would have them treat and respect us. Heavenly Father may we each and every day strive to be more like Jesus. Father thank you for your son, our savior, Jesus Christ, in his name we pray. Amen

Elliott Dean, Gilmer

I agree with truck driver. Pointing fingers in the paper is not so nice when it gets pointed at you. I guess he's done returned his called in favor for Fowler, so now he's going to be quiet. I don't owe any favors, so I'll just tell it like I see it. If the boy is right-Fowler-in what he has done then why is he avoiding going to court to prove his innocence? Seems like he likes being paid for months and months while sitting at home. An attorney should know if he screwed up or not, so I kinda take it that he screwed up since he is running fast in any direction other than the court room.

My question is, "Where is all the concern coming from for saving the taxpayers money?" I don't recall seeing a similar letter to the editor in the newspaper when Dean Lumber Company was being shut down by the government. Somebody must have had to pay for the legal representation? I would assume the taxpayers have footed the bill for the government side. I have found out that legal issues are not important and they are personal vendettas when it is to “one's advantage” in the matter. Personally, your a nice guy, but I disagree on this matter. I don't believe the District Attorney will waste his time chasing cases that will not bring about justice and revenue to Upshur County. While I personally do not care for the District Attorney, I care less for the pompus people in these positions being questioned about the legality of what they did. Many questionable things happen in Upshur County, one thing in particular was the way Lake Gilmer went up, where it went up and who just happened to own property in the area and who received sizeable monies for their properties in a number of sales to the city/county in seemingly one sided deals. Many questionable things happen in Gilmer for the people that seem to be in charge of things and this is what the public does not like. The buddy system in Gilmer, or rather the "Protection Racket" needs to come to a halt and this is why so many people applaud what the District Attorney is doing.
